When the 1791-digit prime number 5*2^5947+1 was discovered in 1979 by Atkin and Rickert, it was the largest non-Mersenne (and eighth-largest overall) prime number known according to a list of large prime numbers prepared by Samuel Yates in December of that year. [Dobb]
