GIMPS reports: July 11, 2010. Almost 7 years after discovering M(20996011), GIMPS finished double-checking every smaller Mersenne number. Since no primes were found, the "40th known Mersenne prime" can now be simply called the "40th Mersenne prime". Congratulations and thanks to all the GIMPS members that perform this less glamorous double-checking work.
