GIMPS has discovered a new largest known prime number: 2^{82589933}1 (24,862,048 digits) Carl Friedrich Gauss, "The Prince of Mathematicians," was born in 1777. In 1777 the symbol i for imaginary unit was first used by Leonhard Euler, in a memoir. [Gevisier] Johann Lambert, the first to prove that was irrational, died in the prime year 1777. In January of this prime year the people of New Connecticut declared their independence, later becoming the state of Vermont. [Green]
