GIMPS has discovered a new largest known prime number: 2^{82589933}1 (24,862,048 digits) As of November 2004, (2^14479+1)/3 was the largest proven prime of the form N(p)=(2^p+1)/3. This form figures in the new Mersenne conjecture. N(14479) was proven prime by Marcel Martin's programme Primo, which yielded this certificate of an elliptic curve primality proof. [Broadhurst]
