In 1963 Gillies discovered the three
Mersenne primes 2 11213-1,
2 9941-1 and 2 9689-1 [ Gillies64] during
the checkout of the Illiac-II supercomputer for which he
designed the control pipelining. The primality testing
algorithm exercised nearly every circuit in the
Illiac-II. Gillies died of a rare virus in 1975, at age
