GIMPS has discovered a new largest known prime number: 282589933-1 (24,862,048 digits)

It is not known whether the double-Mersenne number MM(61) is prime or composite. It contains 694,127,911,065,419,642 digits and is currently far too large for the usual Lucas-Lehmer test.
