GIMPS has discovered a new largest known prime number: 2^{82589933}1 (24,862,048 digits) Vinogradov's theorem states that every sufficiently large odd integer is a sum of at most 3 primes. It is closely related to both Goldbach's and Waring's prime number conjectures and named after Russian mathematician Ivan Matveyevich Vinogradov (18911983).
