GIMPS has discovered a new largest known prime number: 282589933-1 (24,862,048 digits)

A Wagstaff prime is a prime of the form (2p+1)/3. The number appears in the new Mersenne conjecture and has applications in cryptography. It is named after Samuel S. Wagstaff, Jr., a professor of computer science at Purdue University.
